The idea of dichotomy between the Hindu society and Muslim society has been a subject matter for philosophical discussions since long. But the conditions that a society which is divided by religions encounters on the same land are horrendous. Nandita Das, the independent filmmaker who has made this film to show the negative angle of it, has made a universal film about it. This valiant effort of hers has shown that communalism not only affects two or more countries, but it’s prevailed over all over the world. No wonder, it, has got been shown in many villages of riots hit states. You watch the different stories that unfold as one by one the people come out of the riots.Some are angry, some are guilty, some can’t afford to take matter so seriously, some try to win praises. To put it in a nutshell, all of them are trying to find the next step in their lives. The movie is not about religion, it’s about all religions. And it is not only a documentary, it is a dramatization of very difficult period in India’s history. The characters in the film are totally different from each other, but their problem is common.
It is quite commendable that the director has shown how communal riots became a part of Indian culture. It’s a good film by many standards, but it gets a bit lost in areas that doesn’t have direct bearing with the context. But in spite of this, the film is a must watch for those who can see the philosophical message. Nawazuddin Siddiqui can be the only one to come out of the film without a mark. But that’s something you expect from Nandita Das. Irfan Khan, Tabu is so much into his characteristic roles that it feels like he’s there just for his presence and he’s not even bothered much about his acting.
Each story in the film reminds us of the importance of giving a chance to people who are hiding in the darkness of their minds and being ashamed of what they have done. We need to wake up from the trance and we need to remember how much behind this kind of hate is still the fear of helplessness and the need to build a strong society.
