As of a few weeks ago, there were glitches creeping into Lightroom 5. For example, when I tried to export a new version of the RAW file Zucca, which is a popular brand of film currently owned by Kodak, I couldn’t save the new version. Lightroom tracks changes to files but you can’t export changes that you’ve made to a file without first deleting the old version. This may or may not be limited to that particular file. I also noticed that exported files from my Lightroom version 5 collection appeared to be partially broken (or corrupted)–the RAW files were broken, for example. I even tried re-importing the RAW files, but that didn’t quite work any better than just making a new copy, which seemed to work fine. I found out that the problem arose from the fact that Lightroom 5 was dealing with me using somewhat limited memory during the export and import processes. One of the problems with having very little memory in this environment is that it starts hitting issues with temporary files that it’s maintaining. I also think we can expect Lightroom 5 to be somewhat slower than Lightroom 4, since it really should be using more RAM and disk space. As of this writing, Lightroom 5 still seems to be a bit slow since I’m using my PC’s eight-core processor with eight-gigabytes of RAM. Lightroom 5 really seemed to take over a minute just to open a catalog and populate it with around 300 images.”
