The Fountainhead is a 1949 American black-and-white drama film produced by Henry Blanke, directed by King Vidor, and starring Gary Cooper, Patricia Neal, Raymond Massey, Robert Douglas and Kent Smith. The film is based on the bestselling 1943 novel of the same name by Ayn Rand, who also wrote the screenplay adaptation. Although Rand’s screenplay was used with minimal alterations, she later criticized the editing, production design and acting.
Rand completed her screenplay in June 1944. The setting of The Fountainhead is a collective society in which individuals and new ideas of architecture are not accepted, and all buildings must be constructed « … like Greek temples, Gothic cathedrals and mongrels of every ancient style they could borrow », in the deathbed words of Roark’s patron Henry Cameron. Rand’s screenplay criticized the Hollywood film industry and its self-imposed mandate to « give the public what it wants ». Roark, in his architecture, refuses to give in to this demand « by the public ». He refuses to work in any way that compromises his integrity and in which he would succumb to « popular taste ».
The screenplay is significantly different from Rand’s novel. The focus has been shifted to a woman, Dominique, played by Wayne Morris, who heeds the rebellious Roark. Film critics have all agreed that the screenplay dispenses with the magnificent subplots and dissipates the power Rand’s novel contained. Rand’s final words are put into the mouth of Keating, the corrupt capitalist boss, played by Robert Douglas. The opening scene of the film, as written by Rand, is missing from the screenplay. The film focuses more to the theme of egotism, materialism, and greed and less on the architect’s philosophy of objectivism; and a morality play rather than a novel. Randolph Scott, in his commentary with the DVD release of the film, gives a deeper insight of the differences between the novel and the screenev.
