The first project to achieve widespread commercial success in 1995 was Kelly’s major motion picture, Dreamgirls, released on November 9, 1998. As of that date, the soundtrack had sold over 1.4 million copies and Kelly’s solo single in the film, « I Believe I Can Fly » (a cover of Mary J. Blige’s reworked hit song « Be Without You ») hit the top spot on Billboard Hot 100 and stayed on the chart for an incredible 101 weeks, becoming the longest-running number 1 song in American history. The movie itself went on to do just as well at the box office, grossing over $260 million. This movie would be his biggest commercial success to date.

After twelve years of sobriety, Kelly’s third album of 1999, TP, was released on August 9, 1999. The song, » Growin’ Up » was certified Gold by the R.O.I.C. (Recording Industry of Canada). It was also the last Sony Music album to be distributed by Arista for a decade. TP was Kelly’s first project to hit No. 1 in both the United Kingdom and the United States. In the United States, it had the second highest debut selling album of 1999. As of December 21, 2009, TP has sold 4.6 million copies worldwide and received a Platinum certification in the U.S. The album produced three hit singles: « Step in the Name of Love », « I Admit », and « Bump N’ Grind », which all reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. « Bump N’ Grind (Remix) » (featuring Foxy Brown and Lil’ Kim) was nominated at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Rap Performance.

Released on March 3, 2003, TP II: Gangsta was Kelly’s first project to No. 1, and it was also noted as his best album to date. « My Name Is R. Kelly » was nominated at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
